Redshift is the stretching of light to longer, redder wavelengths as it travels through expanding space or away from a source. The more the universe has expanded since light left a galaxy, the greater its redshift, which makes redshift a direct measure of cosmic distance and lookback time. The most distant galaxy confirmed, MoM-z14, sits at a redshift of about 14.4, meaning its light left when the universe was only 280 million years old.
