A planetary nebula is the glowing shell of gas a dying Sun-like star sheds as it transforms into a white dwarf. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with planets; early observers thought the round glowing disks resembled planets. The exposed hot core lights up the expanding gas in vivid colors for a few tens of thousands of years before fading. This is the fate that awaits our own Sun in roughly five billion years.
