Baryogenesis is the unsolved problem of how the universe came to contain matter but almost no antimatter. The Big Bang should have produced them in equal amounts, and they would have annihilated completely, leaving only light. Instead a tiny excess of matter, about one part in a billion, survived to build everything we see. Explaining that imbalance requires physics that violates certain symmetries, and the known violations fall far short of accounting for it.
